Biography 


Anthony Essel-Anderson is a Chartered Accountant in academia with over ten years of experience in university teaching, professional accountancy teaching, academic research, curriculum development and evaluation, student research supervision, professional examinations, and professional development training and workshop facilitation. Essel-Anderson holds a BSc (Administration) and MPhil (Accounting) degrees from the University of Ghana. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.  

Joining Ashesi in August 2008, Essel-Anderson has taught almost all the courses in Accounting and Finance under the Business Administration program. Besides his teaching responsibilities, Essel-Anderson has served the University in several positions, including the Chair of the Academic Programmes Committee, Academic Advisor of the Business Administration Department, Head of the Accounting & Finance area of the Business Administration Department, and member of the Quality Assurance Committee of the Business Administration Department.  

Research Statement 


Essel-Anderson’s research interest areas are in taxation, education, and finance. He has published research papers on accounting education and taxation in rated research journals. He has also co-authored a case study on UT Bank.  Essel-Anderson is a seasoned resource person for business and finance training workshops. He has facilitated Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshops on Microsoft Excel Tools, Financial Modelling, and Risk Management organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana. He has also facilitated inhouse professional development trainings on Advanced MS Excel, Financial Modelling, Data Analytics, MS Power BI, Excel Macros and VBA, Financial Projections, and Business Valuations for the Finance staff of organisations in Ghana, including Fan Milk Ghana Plc, the Tarkwa Mine of AngloGold Ashanti, Oxfam in Ghana, Legal Resources Centre, and PEG Solar Ghana. He has facilitated the Financial Modelling course of the Executive Development programme of the University of Ghana Business School and the Financial Modelling and Working Capital Management modules of the Chartered Diploma in Treasury and Risk Management programme of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana. Moreover, he has successfully organised and facilitated four workshops on Intermediate and Advanced Excel, Financial Modelling, and Budgeting for interested members of the public.

Relevant Industry Engagements and Extra-curricular Activities 


  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana: contributed to corporate decision-making as a member of the ICT Committee of the 2014-2016 and 2016-2018 Councils of the Institute; serves as a resource person for the Institute’s Continuous Professional Development workshops; plays varied roles in the Institute’s professional examinations. 
  • WomensTrust LBG, a not-for-profit organisation based in Ghana and USA: provided strategic direction and contributed to corporate-level decision-making in the position of Chair (June 2017 to August 2020); Vice Chair (February 2016 – May 2017), and member of the Ghana Board of Directors (January 2015 to date).
