Biography
Ms. Thompson is a Lecturer in the Business Administration Department at Ashesi University. Ms. Thompson has found her most successful students/entrepreneurs to be those that were able to clearly articulate their value, recognize a true problem and provide a creative solution for it. While not everyone is built for the world of entrepreneurship or are ready to become business owners, this deep learning and classroom engagement typically prepares students to think more existentially about why they choose to create or engage in commerce.  She’s passionate about the intersections of technology and the social cultural underpinnings that drive societies.

She co-developed the Ashesi Venture Incubator of the NEXT (New Entrepreneurs Xchange for Transformation) Idea to Impact Project a collaboration between Ashesi and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) D-Lab. As a recipient of the 2022 USAID/ANDE Action Lab Gender Equality Action Lab Grant, she leads a team of key African business ecosystem players for the development of African Women Amplified (AWA) a platform that intends to close the funding gap for West African Women entrepreneurs.  She is also the co-founder of the tech platform LITH Africa (Leveraging Intuitive Technology for Health) which integrates CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and machine learning to support the mental well-being of African college students. At Ashesi she currently serves as the Entrepreneurship Concentration Area Lead, Foundations of Design and Entreprenuership Course Coordinator and the lead for the Community Entrepreneurship Program at the Ashesi Entrepreneurship Center.

Teaching Statement
My penchant for learning stems from a deeply rooted curiosity about my own existence and that said existence fit and contribution to society through my critical thoughts, my decisions, and my responses to various experiences. It is my desire to not just to learn but to understand. I believe business at its core encapsulates the human experience, we buy because of how we feel or how we desire to feel and we create because we desire to provide something that makes our existence that much more purposeful, enjoyable, or understandable; more so than not, a simple value exchange.

I have found it to be important to incorporate a “deeper learning approach”; to transition students from rote learning experiences to a style that allows them to think about options that didn't exist. In my previous professional positions I've been committed to adding value through the proponents of analytical reasoning and complex problem solving, as described as outcomes of deeper learning. These experiences have aided in my teaching design to help students think more deeply about overall value creation. Entrepreneurship involves risk, requires creativity, and agility.  I’ve found my most successful students/entrepreneurs to be those that were able to clearly articulate their value, recognize a true problem and provide a creative solution for it. While not everyone is built for the world of entrepreneurship or are ready to become business owners, this deep learning and classroom engagement typically prepares students to think more existentially about why they choose to create or engage in commerce.

It is my goal to be an empathetic educator, understanding that my students learn differently, express themselves differently, and require different types of stimulants to remain intrigued with their work. I plan to teach my students in a way that encourages cultural competency, infuses technology but isn't completely dependent upon it, and requires them to think about the social consequences of their thoughts and actions. Equally, it is my desire to impact my students in a way that allows them to flourish in their individuality. I intend to build a community of purpose driven innovators, who are willing to share their knowledge, their time, and their energy towards thoughts and practices that serve the greater good.

Research Statement
I desire to continue research into breaking down the elements of thriving entrepreneurial ecosystems in developed countries and comparing those elements to the ecosystems in developing countries. It has been stated in several publications about the benefits of small business and entrepreneurship on economies. I want to further explore what exactly contributes to this success. The need for business infrastructure, political stability, and access to education to name a few are the major contributors to a momentous business ecosystem but understanding just how much is also contributed to the person and their capacity, the idea, the culture and their environment is also critical. How do we create replicable business models that benefit those in urban, suburban, and rural communities?

The deeper learning approach model and my classwork framework will allow me to analyse the students, who each represent various backgrounds and life experiences, and their approach to entrepreneurship. In an effort to gain some insight from this sample size on a micro-level and begin to explore these nuances in the macro. My goal is to understand how to develop sustainable processes for business ventures in developing countries that are inclusive of their unique cultural perspective.
