On Thursday 19th July Ashesi’s Office of International Programs welcomed study abroad students from the University of Washington to campus. The students, hosted by the Kokrobite Institute, are in Ghana to explore topics related to race, identity and leadership as part of their Sankofa programme.
They joined some Ashesi students, staff and faculty for a Forum on Economic Development titled “Perspectives on Development”, led by Ashesi lecturer Dr. Stephen Armah. Groups were made up of a mixture of Ashesi and UW students. Participants from both institutions greatly enjoyed the forum, especially when the group broke up into smaller groups and there was an opportunity to hear each other’s perspectives on Ghana.
“Visiting Ashesi University gave me greater confidence in the dynamic impact my generation will have on the world,” said Ariel Davies, from University of Washington. “Engaging in conversation that focuses on government decisions that either cripple or advance one’s society intrigued me, and allowed me to understand clearly the personal stories of student trials and tribulations to reach a liberal education (in Ghana). I found another family at Ashesi, one that I am a part of, that loves to live and learn, while developing into international leaders. It is my desire to return, to break the monotony of same type thinkers I come in contact with. The atmosphere is peaceful and my newfound friends are full of life and abundant intelligence.’’
