Understanding the world of work: Ashesi alumni share their experiences with senior class

As the Class of 2013 prepares to graduate from Ashesi, the Career Services Centre has continued to engage them in conversations around personal development and life after university. Last Saturday, members of Ashesi’s alumni community joined the conversation, visiting campus to share their work experience after graduation at a networking event with members of the senior class.

Five of the alumni who were present at the event, Phoebe Acolatse ’11, Eric Acheampong ’06, Kwei Quaye Foli ’09, Godson Quaye ’09 and Jonathan Attipoe ’11, gave presentations on their experiences in the world of work and entrepreneurship. Each of the five alumni shared unique experiences about the challenges they faced and continue to face in their career development. They also gave insights to how they manage and learn from them.

Other alumni at the event also responded to questions from members of the senior class, and shared their own experiences in the world of work. The discussion covered several themes, including achieving a healthy work-life balance, managing problems with teammates at work, planning for a startup and leveraging on the Ashesi alumni network.

“I had a lot of questions answered,” said Abdelrahman A. Barakat ’13 after the event. “Today has provided a good chance for me to reflect on my career planning after school, and it has been great meeting some of Ashesi’s alumni and speaking with them.”

“I wish I had this opportunity when I was graduating from Ashesi,” said Eric Acheampong ’06. “Coming to campus to share and reflect on our experiences as alumni has been informative, and I believe it is very timely. I commend the career services team for putting this together.”

“I like how real and personal the experiences shared were,” said Selase Dela-Brown ’13. “We got to hear from people in all sorts of industries and environments, and I believe this has helped us gain a very practical understanding of life outside of school. I look forward to more of these events.”
