No Bad Days: Conversations About ASC Week
Our History
The Ashesi Student Council (ASC) was formed two years after the university opened its doors in March 2002. The process included designing a constitution for student governance, led by student pioneers Seyram Ahiabor ’05, Daniel Ofori-Dankwa ’06, Patrick Quantson ’05, and Fatou Traore ’06.
Events & Traditions
At Ashesi, traditions are more than events — they’re shared experiences that unite the community, celebrate diversity, and create lasting memories. The Ashesi Student Council (ASC) supports the organizations and sustains these signature traditions
This is a ceremony introduced in 2014 to welcome the freshmen and congratulate them for being accepted into the Ashesi Community. Executives of the Student Council serve water to the freshmen in calabashes engraved with the Ashesi logo and the freshman class year. This symbolizes the tradition of Ghana and other African countries where hospitality is shown by serving visitors with water to welcome them into people’s homes. The ceremony is coupled with a speech encouraging the freshmen and continuing students to embrace the diversity at Ashesi and take advantage of the opportunities available to interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
“Akwaaba Night” at Ashesi University is a welcoming event for new students, hosted by the Ashesi Student Council (ASC). “Akwaaba” means “welcome” in the Twi language of Ghana.
The event serves as an official and festive orientation, giving first-year students an energetic start to the academic year. It is often organized and run by students to help integrate newcomers into campus life.
Introduced in 2010, the Ubora Awards is a ceremony, which seeks to acknowledge students for their achievements in, and contributions to embracing the spirit and qualities of Ashesi university. “Ubora” is a Swahili word meaning “Excellence”; hence the event is an electrifying evening of glamour, great music, food and talent, and serves as a platform to exhibit and celebrate the personalities that inspire the Ashesi student body.
Üstün Sports Awards Night, popularly known as ÜSTÜN, is Ashesi University’s annual celebration of sporting excellence. The name Üstün, meaning outstanding in Turkish, reflects the event’s purpose: to recognize athletes who demonstrate skill, dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Since its launch in 2022, ÜSTÜN has become one of the most anticipated nights on the Ashesi calendar, blending sports, elegance, and community spirit.
Each year, in the spring semester, the ASC dedicates a week to students to celebrate their achievements and contributions to the welfare of Ashesi, and to embrace and expose students to the ideas and concepts of the Council through a string of wacky events. Each day of the week is represented by a dressing theme coupled with a flurry of activities relating to the theme for the day. Common themes include Popular Culture Day where students dressed like in the 1990s, and many other events and Crazy Day, which is the highlight of week.
