When Sean Yeboah ‘26, a Mechanical Engineering student at Ashesi University, began his internship at the Volta River Authority’s Hydro Generation Department in Akosombo, he was not entirely sure what to expect. Yet, what started as a step into the unknown quickly became a rewarding experience filled with knowledge and growth.
At the Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant, he joined a mechanical team whose expertise and community shaped his learning. Yeboah gained firsthand exposure to turbine maintenance, compressor systems, real-time troubleshooting, and safety protocols; the very operations that keep the nation’s electricity flowing.
This internship, Yeboah recounts, went beyond applying classroom theory; it offered him the opportunity to see VRA’s values in practice. He observed teamwork, excellence, and service, principles that guide an Ashesi education as well. Along the way, he connected with experienced professionals and fellow interns, turning first-day introductions into friendships. “Together, we shared long days, deep conversations, a few challenges, and lots of laughs; turning what started as handshakes into lifelong connections,” he reflected.
Looking back, he describes the experience as rewarding. It sharpened his skills, deepened his curiosity about energy systems, and strengthened his resolve to contribute to Ghana’s energy future. “I walk away from this experience more confident, more curious, and more committed to being part of Ghana’s energy future,” he said.
