End Hunger

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Ashesi Alumni Support Organic Farming

Agriculture is a critical driver of Ghana’s economy, contributing 25% of GDP and employing over 50% of the workforce. Yet, many farmers face economic hardship. As Audrey S-Darko ’19, a member of an Ashesi team that won $10,000.00+ in funding for their sustainable agricultural intervention, states: “The onus lies on us to uplift hardworking farmers.” The team’s solution focuses on transforming bagasse (a by-product of sugarcane farming) into bio-compost fertilizer, which has helped farmers in Ghana’s Volta Region boost yields, reduce crop losses, and increase incomes. This aligns with SDG 2 by improving the livelihoods of small-scale food producers through innovative farming practices.

Moses Yangnemenga ‘18 founded the Tieme Ndo initiative, which provides improved seeds, pesticides, and fertilizers to farmers on credit. Over 100 farmers across four communities are enrolled, with results showing significant yield improvements with one farmer seeing a 150% increase in output. Christian Hakizimana ’22, an AHCI² Fellow, runs Hakikris, a premium local rice brand in Burundi that has delivered over 280 tons of clean, packaged rice across East Africa contributes to sustainable agriculture by enhancing productivity and supporting small-scale farmers in adopting better farming practices.

Wuyeh Jobe ‘19 and Muhammad Jammeh ‘19 are establishing GamFruits, a modern fruit farm in Gunjur, Gambia, focused on organic production. Their project seeks to increase the yield of healthy, nutritious fruits, while also promoting affordable pricing for consumers. Their efforts connect directly to SDG 2 by improving agricultural productivity through organic farming and ensuring access to nutritious food.
