Freedom comes with responsibility
This is a proverb motif from the corpus of symbols found in the ‘adinkra’ stamped cloth.

But freedom plays a central role in academia where free speech, or academic freedom liberates institutions to teach, communicate ideas, as well as question received knowledge without censure.
Academic freedom, however, is not celebrated as an end in itself; knowledge acquired should be ideally marshalled to address the pressing needs of society.
While Ashesi upholds the principles of academic freedom, its special niche is to situate academic excellence in sound moral foundations, and produce a new generation of thought leaders that anchor learning in high moral standards, and lead by example.
Academic excellence without moral integrity weakens the arsenal for leadership in Africa. Ashesi’s dream is to see the fruits of academic freedom optimally impact the moral quality of leadership.
