PROVERB OF THE MONTH

“Wo nsa da mu a, yenni nnya wo.”

When your hand is in the bowl, we don’t eat without you.

This proverb reminds us that when we take part in a shared task, we naturally share in its rewards. It celebrates participation, responsibility, and the idea that community flourishes when everyone is willing to contribute.

In many traditional settings, young people often ate together from a common bowl—a simple but powerful act that cultivated trust, unity, and a sense of belonging. Those who kept themselves apart missed not only the meal, but the relationships, learning, and support that grow from showing up for others.

At its heart, the proverb is a call to cooperation. A community thrives when people choose engagement over isolation and when individual talents are placed in service of the whole. When we participate fully, we strengthen the bonds that enable progress, shared wellbeing, and collective achievement.

At Ashesi, this spirit is central to our community. We encourage students to be active contributors—to collaborate, listen, lead, and learn alongside others. These habits prepare graduates to work across differences, build trust, and guide teams and institutions with integrity.

Great leaders rarely stand apart. They are people who consistently join in, uplift others, and help shape the work of the communities they belong to.
