“The teeth and tongue sleep together, but do not quarrel.”
Ese ne Tekrema (the teeth and toungue) is an adinkra symbol representing the proverb: ‘The teeth and tongue sleep together, but do not dispute.’
This proverb advocates peace, harmony, and interdependence in a community of diverse interests. The teeth and tongue differ in substance and function, but sleep together in peace. Even though frequent clashes and feuding would have been expected between them, the teeth and tongue remain a great model of peaceful coexistence.
The teeth’s strength has not been exploited for abuse, and neither has its soft and tender neighbor lived in fear. Human communities consist of diverse cultures and ethnicities; young and old, male and female, powerful and vulnerable, but should learn from the teeth and tongue that live in peace and harmony.
Unity in diversity is often a function of continuous interaction and negotiation that leads to a blend of norms and peaceful coexistence. Above all, diversity enables various components of society to complement one another in a network of interdependence.
Ashesi University, with its gender and cultural mix, is a great example of peace and harmony in diversity. It’s important for leadership to appreciate and preserve the foundations of peaceful cohabitation in community life, which promotes academic excellence.
