Professor Kwesi Yankah Launches Digital Library Archiving Decades of Ghanaian History

December 2, 2025 – Emeritus Professor Kwesi Yankah has launched a Digital Library, kwesiyankahwrites.com, that brings together decades of his scholarly and literary work on Ghanaian social and political history. The library, launched during a virtual ceremony, features a curated collection of his books, monographs, keynote speeches, and media writings, including his columns “Kwatriot” (1986–1998) and “Fireman” (1977–1980).

“I was thinking of the younger ones, and what would remain for them 10 or 15 years from now when we are no more,” shared Prof. Yankah during the event, which was hosted by Ashesi and moderated by Dr. Paulina Kuranchie. “Would there be anything for them to consume, anything that tells the story of the world as we lived it?”

“It immortalizes an extraordinary intellectual heritage, preserves Ghana’s cultural, academic, and media history, and inspires the next generation of journalists and writers,” shared Albert Dwumfuor, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, in a keynote address. “The Prof. Yankah Digital Library is more than a website. It is a national memory bank, one that captures where Ghana has come from, where she stands, and where she must go.”

For Dr. Eric Obeng of the University of Southern California, who joined the virtual event, the library highlights the personal and scholarly impact of Prof. Yankah’s work. “Professor Yankah’s work and now this library, encourage us to chart our own course and to tell our own story,” he explained. He applauded the initiative for safeguarding the wisdom of the past, observing that without such efforts, the loss of knowledge-bearers would be synonymous with “libraries set on fire.”
