President of the College of Wooster to deliver special lecture at Ashesi

Ashesi University College, Berekuso – The Office of the Provost at Ashesi will host Dr. Grant Cornwell, President of the College of Wooster, for a special lecture on campus at 4.30 PM on the 18th of March 2014.

The lecture, titled “The Liberal Arts for the 21st Century: Towards an Ethics of Global Citizenship,” will focus on the historical principles of liberal education and how globalization and technology give cause to restate some of those principles and think in new ways about others. The lecture would also aim to bring a deeper understanding of the importance of the liberal arts in education.

While at Ashesi, Dr. Cornwell will also talk with university leadership on many kinds of exchanges and cooperative projects. Prior to his special lecture, the Ashesi Student Council will host a panel discussion with Dr. Cornwell and the Ashesi student community at 3:00pm in Databank Hall 216.

Dr. Grant Cornwell took office as The College of Wooster’s 11th president in 2007. Under his leadership, the College of Wooster was named by U.S News & World Report in the top 5 liberal arts colleges that “do the best job of educating undergraduates in 2009 and 2010.

A philosopher by training, his scholarship and teaching lie in the areas of human rights, globalization and critical race theory. Dr. Cornwell is co-editor of two books: Global Multiculturalism: Comparative Perspectives on Ethnicity, Race, and Nation and Democratic Education in an Age of Difference: Redefining Citizenship in Higher Education. He has authored more than two-dozen scholarly articles or chapters in edited volumes, as well as a CD-ROM and website on the history of slavery and the sugar industry in St. Kitts.

Nationally recognized for his work in defining liberal learning in a global environment, Dr. Cornwell serves on the Council on Foreign Relations’ Global Literacy Advisory Board. He chairs the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s board of directors, serves as president of the North Coast Athletic Conference, and is a member of the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Cornwell served as vice president of the university and dean of academic affairs at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., for five years before joining Wooster. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and biology from St. Lawrence, and a master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Chicago.
