In 2022/2023, the management of Ashesi University contracted the Energy Foundation of Ghana to conduct an energy audit of the university. The foundation conducted an energy efficiency walk-through and power monitoring audit at the university to identify potential energy efficiency and conservation improvement opportunities. It reviewed all faulty and energy-inefficient equipment and appliances, identified those that could be replaced, and recommended solutions to address them.
Ashesi implemented some solutions by upgrading existing buildings to higher energy efficiency and maintained the progress under its Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Policy. The changes included the replacement of all CFLs with LEDs in existing buildings, using LEDs in all new building construction, decommissioning aged- generators, and effective preventative maintenance of the generators to optimize efficiency.
Ashesi installed presence detectors to reduce the working hours of lamps in common areas and practiced opening up office curtains during the daytime to let in sunlight to lower electricity costs. These actions are estimated to save 13,658 kWh per year.
