Nuhu Samad ’30: Building Impact While Pursuing a Dream

Nuhu Abdul Samad ’30 had already begun investing in the lives of young people long before he arrived at Ashesi. While pursuing his goal of a university education, Samad spent three years teaching at a private basic school in Kintampo, drawing on his earlier experience in the timber processing and retail industries. He taught English Language, Mathematics, and Science to students in Grades 6 through 9, but his role extended beyond the classroom. He became a counselor and confidant to many of his students, supporting them through challenges in and outside their studies.

Even after leaving the school, Samad continued to offer free tuition to some of his former students who needed extra help with their studies. A few months later, that commitment grew into the Great Minds Foundation, which he established to provide free tuition in selected subjects and help students in his community prepare for the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

A lover of the arts, Samad incorporated poetry writing and performance into the Foundation’s activities. He said the approach was intended to “give a refreshing twist to the learning experience.” It was also a way to develop students’ talents and make learning more engaging. For Samad, success is not measured by what he gains, but by what he gives.

“When my students excel, I feel proud that I have been a part of their journey,” he said.

Giving back to society resonates deeply with Samad, who sees himself as a beneficiary of others’ sacrifices. He speaks fondly of Ashesi alumni Matthew Indekudugu ’21 and Gabriel Domoninge Naa ’25, whom he met by chance. “They encouraged me in all my endeavors and even my applications year after year,” he said. Over time, the alumni became his mentors, continually providing support in different ways.

Samad’s path to Ashesi was not immediate. After several applications, he eventually joined the Class of 2030 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Now, he is turning his attention to what he can build with the opportunity. His dream is to develop sustainable power supply systems for his community back home, helping address the power outages that often disrupt students’ evening study.

Leaning into Ashesi’s liberal arts curriculum, Samad hopes to sharpen his creativity while becoming a better leader. “The journey is just beginning, but I am ready to make every moment count,” he said with excitement.
