On Monday, 25th October, 2010, Ashesi introduced the newest guest in our Visiting Executive series, Ms. Hazel Amuah Quayson, Regional Head, Centre of Expertise – Learning/Training and Management Development for Nestle Central & West Africa. Ms. Quayson spoke on the topic of “The Transition from College to Work.” Ms. Hazel delivered the presentation so brilliantly that, it kept the audience in anticipation of the second part. Her vibrant persona contributed to the success of her presentation. Her slides gave meaning to the quote, “education is what remains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught” by George Savile. She appealed to every student’s desire to be successful in their respective career paths by drawing on her personal experiences.
Speaking to her audience, Ashesi’s graduating class of 2011, Ms. Quayson made the following recommendations to the class:
- Take college assignments such as homework and research projects seriously.
- Work to acquire life-long skills such as good communication skills, time management, good networking skills, business etiquette and personal branding.
- Embrace change after graduation, e.g. the psychological, environmental, social changes that you will go through once you leave your comfort zone of college and friends in Ashesi.
- Know the kind of jobs that fit your interests and skills. Refraining from applying to any company simply because they have an opening or because they pay well.
- Develop yourself now so that employers will chase after you and not the other way around.
The community is grateful to Ms. Quayson, The Ashesi Career Services Center and The Business Department for the Visiting Executive program.
