My Year Abroad Experience At Ashesi

Every year, students from partner institutions all over the globe come to Ashesi through exchange programs to enrich their academic experience and learn about Ghana. Over the last academic year, Lise Chesnais and Ines Berrahou joined us #atAshesi from Sciences Po. Lise Chesnais shares her year abroad experience.

My Ashesi experience
After learning about the African continent during my first year, I decided to study in Ghana. I wanted to experience living and learning in an African country and improve my English.

Ashesi University was the right institution to help me achieve my objectives, as I could continue studying about Africa here. The school offers several courses related to Africa. I was able to experience a new educational system, as well as different methods and approaches to talking about the continent and its issues.

My classes were run the same way they were at my school in France. As for my goal of improving my English, Ashesi helped me a lot. Most of the teachers and students were very supportive and pushed me to improve. One thing I appreciated about Ashesi was how easy it was to make friends or meet new people. Whether it was students, staff or faculty, they all made me feel at home.

The Office of Diversity and International Programs (ODIP) team were helpful and answered all my questions throughout the year. I felt at ease thanks to their kindness and care.

Experiencing Ghana
I also came to Ghana to travel and discover new cultures and landscapes. Because I only took Africana courses, my workload was lighter. I could take advantage of my weekends to travel around the different regions of Ghana. These trips made me realize this country’s cultural richness and the kindness of Ghanaians.

At first, I was afraid to travel because of the means of transport, like the “trotro”, which works very differently from the public transport I know in France. However, right from the start, I realized that it wasn’t complicated. In fact, there will always be someone to help you and point you in the right direction. People always try to help you and never leave you in an uncomfortable situation.

I’m still very proud of myself and everything I’ve achieved. I’ve improved my English drastically. I managed to integrate into a new environment and make some very good friends I hope to see again. Finally, I’ve gained self-confidence and matured, making me want to push my limits even more. This year in Ghana has opened the door to many more trips.

“I go back home with joy, knowing I will be able to apply everything I’ve learned to my subsequent projects. However, I’m sad to be leaving a country that has given me so much and changed me forever.”
