Kobla Nyomi
Class of 2011
I was still a final year student at Mfantsipim School when I heard about Ashesi for the first time. I got curious after I watched a 20 minute documentary presentation on Ashesi’s mission and style of education. It was unlike anything I had seen or heard of in our part of the world. I went ahead to take a brochure and read up more about the BSc. Computer Science program. I was truly impressed that a university in Ghana had such a detailed and relevant course structure for Computer Science. I was certain that Ashesi’s Computer Science curriculum was what I needed to explore my growing interest in computers.
Being a hobbyist programmer and technology fanatic, I had always wanted to pursue a degree program in Computer Science that would be practical and relevant to the Ghanaian setting. Indeed my expectations were very high. After three and a half years, I can confidently say that Ashesi has exceeded my expectations on an exponential scale. By the time I completed my first year, Ashesi had developed within me a set of critical thinking skills; a foundation that was key, to better understanding and objectively critiquing the courses that were ahead of me. Within my first year, I was able to develop and sell a point of sale application. In my second year, I presented before a panel of ministers and other stake holders a solution to traffic offences that were plaguing our roads at a transport forum that was organized by my class. I was also able to develop a number of games and applications which I distributed freely. These were all things I could not have imagined myself doing before enrolling into Ashesi.
My most unforgettable experience being at Ashesi was having the opportunity to be one of three Africans selected to intern at Google Inc. for three months. This was a sure proof that Ashesi has not only prepared me for the local Job Market but also to rub shoulders with software engineers on the international scene. Enrolling into Ashesi has been the best decision I have made for my education and I have absolutely no regrets for doing so. Ashesi has indeed empowered me to be able to effect change wherever I find myself.
