Educate, party, pass, graduate, move to the next thing! These were my initial thoughts as I entered Ashesi in my freshman year. Ashesi was just a stepping stone I had to overcome! Learn, Living, Finding my Passion, Making Goals, Problem solving, My Community and Africa. These are the things that now reside in my mind after nearly 4 years of Ashesi. Since coming here, from meeting and interacting with faculty with diverse areas of expertise, likening dogs to leaders in leadership seminars, developing a love for my country and continent through discussions and literature, interacting with people from around Africa, I have developed academically, in character and spirit.
My experience from joining in a campaign to support honor, tasting politics through the Ashesi Student Council, building strong relationships, decorating a cave to look like a luxurious lounge for a party right down to falling on the basketball court in an involving game has been the factor that changed Ashesi from an educational institution to a learning ground. As a learning ground, I have benefited from the opportunity for personal, leadership and academic nurturing. My Ashesi experience has been nothing close to normal. Similar to the upward and downward movement of the heart rate on a Electrocardiogram, it has fluctuated from seasons of pure bliss to ones filled with stress and hard work with the occasional “I can’t take this anymore!”. I have had experiences in planning a fair, hosting a show, teamwork, understanding the role of the environment in my life, caring for people around me as well as learning to see solutions and not just problems. All in all, My Ashesi experience has been packed with varying emotions, hard work, problem solving and continuous learning and support.
