On June 4, 2022, hundreds of families, friends, students, and alumni will join the Commencement Ceremony for Ashesi’s Class of 2022. Nominated by his peers, Ndze’dzenyuy Karl Lemfon ’22 will be representing the Class as Commencement Speaker.
“We have shared many memories as a class,” says Ndze’dzenyuy ’22. “I expect Commencement Day to be a day of celebration because we are the first class to be having our ceremony in-person since the pandemic started. We have also shared a lot of struggles, and I hope that we can take this opportunity to reflect on how far we have come.”
Lemfon grew up in the Northwest Region of Cameroon and was accepted into Ashesi in 2018 as a Computer Science Major. While at Ashesi, he has served the Ashesi community in several capacities. From representing his class in the Ashesi Student Council’s Parliament to serving as Secretary-General of the International Students’ Association, Lemfon dedicated himself to community service.
In his junior year, he became the Lead for the Ashesi Developer Student Club and joined the Ashesi Students Council government as Chair of the Academic Committee. In the same year, he represented Ashesi at the Applied Methods and Research Experience programme, run in partnership with the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he worked on an exciting software project for a leading US tire manufacturing company. Lemfon is now working actively towards attending graduate school, with a focus on Software Engineering.
“I am driven by the conviction that we never really understand ideas until we can teach others about them and find ways to use them to solve problems in the world,” says Lemfon. “In the long run, I hope to contribute to the teaching and practice of Computer Science on the African continent by encouraging and supporting students to participate in research even in their undergraduate years.”
