An institute of Ashesi University, the Ghana Climate Innovation Center (GCIC) , provides green programs for the local communities across all 16 of Ghana’s regions and strongly fosters female participation. Some programs are direct training, while some heighten awareness and indirectly educate.
The programs include:
– Business Incubation Program
– Women Entrepreneurs’ Transformation Program (WETP)
– Policy Alternatives for a Green Economy (PAGE – Ghana)
In each of Ghana’s 16 regions, the GCIC engages approximately 200 individuals a year and in the green ventures it establishes it avoids 400,000 metric tons of CO2 emission is avoided.
Specific examples of energy efficient ventures includes:
SmartWatt Limited, a Green MSME Business in Ghana. SmartWatt Limited specializes in retrofitting fossil fuel engines to electric engines for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, offering sustainable transportation solutions and contributing to the transition towards clean energy mobility.

Ponaa Briquettes a Clean Coal Company that manufactures charcoal briquettes from rice husks and cassava starch for households and commercial customers in Tamale, Ghana and surrounding areas helps reduce carbon emissions by turning agricultural waste into fuel, reducing the need for firewood and charcoal, and preserving trees as carbon sinks.
