Department of
Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences
The Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Department at Ashesi designs and helps teach the liberal arts and sciences core curriculum, a cornerstone of the Ashesi education.
The department also houses efforts to launch Ashesi’s Law with Public Policy Programme, which prepares students for private, public, non-profit, and non-governmental careers. The programme is also an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in multiple sub-disciplines of the Law.
Our courses encourage students to explore the connections between various pieces of information, question assumptions, and analyse different perspectives. Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to help students develop ideas on how to shape Africa’s diverse societies for future generations.

Leadership, Service, and Ethics
The leadership seminar series helps students develop self-awareness through the exploration of different notions of leadership, institutions, and service.
Giving Voice to Values
Giving Voice to Values seminars help students build awareness of a key component of leadership: speaking up for one’s values. The classes, part of Leadership 1 and co-taught by alumni, explore effective strategies for addressing situations of values conflict.
Community Service
All students are required to complete community service as part of their coursework in the Leadership 4 class. The goal is to help students develop a sense of good citizenship and concern for others. Other co-curricular programmes exist to support student volunteer efforts.

Writing Centre
The Writing Centre at Ashesi is willing to help all members of the Ashesi community with any kind of writing at any stage of the writing process. Tutors can help you construct outlines, understand an assignment prompt, or even provide guidance for polishing a draft.
The Centre’s goal is to help you to identify and understand the strengths and growth areas of your writing, help find solutions, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and proofread on your own.
All students are highly encouraged to use the Writing Centre for support irrespective of classification, programme, native language, or pervious experiences with writing. Faculty and staff may also request assistance from the AWC in designing both print and digital composition assignments for students, crafting workshops related to various writing and documentation concerns in a course, or to craft writing and research guides by discipline for instructional use.
