Ghana Poverty and Inequality Analysis

Despite a decline in the extreme poverty rate in Sub-Saharan Africa, population growth suggests that 113 million more people live in
extreme poverty today than in 1990. At Ashesi, an Economics professor researches the state and impact of poverty in Ghana and assesses the relationships between growth, poverty reduction, and inequality. He has collaborated with UNICEF in this research, and the report reveals that although Ghana celebrates being a lower middle income country, the gap between the poorest 10% and the richest 10% of the population has been on the rise and has increased since 2006. The wealthiest decile now consumes 6.8 times more than the poorest 10%. The report specifically aims to assess poverty trends and estimated inequality levels in Ghana since the 1990s, determine to what extent the very poorest are benefiting from Ghana’s economic growth, and assess the relationships between growth, poverty reduction, and inequality.
