From Ambivalence to Belonging: M’baadi Conton Reflects on His First Week at Ashesi

I would describe how I felt when I first arrived on campus as a mix of excitement and uncertainty. I was excited to finally be here and to think about the possibilities and opportunities that attending Ashesi could open up. At the same time, I was nervous about what lay ahead. I had visited the University twice before, but each time I returned, something about the campus never ceased to amaze me. That sense of anticipation remained when I arrived on Wednesday.

Starting university also came with questions about finding my place and building new connections. Those worries, I soon realized, were greater in my mind than they were in reality. I found it much easier to connect with my peers than I had expected. The warmth of the Ashesi community made me feel welcome and helped ease my fears.

That sense of welcome was only the beginning of what stood out to me about Ashesi. One thing that distinguishes the University from other institutions I have experienced is how intentional everything feels. From lectures and meals to the student body and the selection process, there seems to be a clear purpose behind how the Ashesi experience is shaped. It feels designed to help prepare the next generation of African leaders.

My interactions with classmates and peers have also introduced me to cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking that I may not have encountered elsewhere. These early conversations have made me even more excited about the connections and relationships I will build as I continue my journey at Ashesi.
