William Kwesi Akuffo

Full-time: Mechatronics Engineering

William K. Akuffo is a researcher and educator specializing in control engineering with applications in autonomous robotics and mechatronic systems. With mechatronics masters degrees from ETH Zurich and Ashesi University, he focuses on developing and implementing simple and optimal control strategies for mechatronic and robotic systems. William believes that teaching should be done through a sense of thoughtfulness and empathy. This allows for the realization of feedback that can make teaching better and more enjoyable while motivating students. Thoughtfulness and empathy allow the teacher to understand the perspectives and levels of comprehension in which the students dwell.

William’s research interests lie in the field of control engineering and its direct applications to autonomous robotics. As autonomous robotics becomes increasingly ubiquitous across various industries and daily life, control systems are essential for ensuring that these robots and machines behave intelligently and efficiently. Mechatronic systems rely heavily on precise control to function optimally, making control engineering a fundamental aspect of their design and operation. Akuffo’s research has resulted in publications and software tools designed to facilitate research and control system education. His long-term research vision is to push the boundaries of control engineering to create more intelligent and capable autonomous systems.

In summary, it is his ultimate goal to teach and create a learning environment that will foster the ability of students not merely to remember and understand but to go beyond and apply in relevant situations by drawing connections among ideas while being able to justify a design stand or decision to create or produce original work.
