Professor Earle Abrahamson

Professor Earle Abrahamson was born and bred in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is a globally recognised leader, champion, and advocate for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). He is the only professor of SoTL at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. He has significantly advanced SoTL on national and international stages through his leadership, advocacy, and inspirational practice. Earle holds prestigious fellowships from the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) and Advance HE, where he is a Principal Fellow and National Teaching Fellow. His work has profoundly influenced educational qualifications, curriculum development, and the professionalisation of teaching within higher education and beyond.

Earle’s leadership extends across multiple sectors. He is a former co-chair of ISSOTL’s global Advocacy Committee, co-edits the field-leading journal Teaching and Learning Inquiry (TLI), and serves on its editorial board. He is also the co-founder of the Journal of Impact Cultures and sits on the editorial board of Patterns of Practice a new UK SoTL journal. Most recently, he was elected co-convenor of the Advance HE TEAL Network, continuing to inspire innovation in teaching enhancement and SoTL practice.

In 2025, Earle co-led the inaugural EuroSoTL collaborative writing groups in Groningen and currently sits on the EuroSoTL Board. He is an active founding member of the UK SoTL Alliance, a strategic group dedicated to promoting and raising the profile of SoTL across the UK.

His research foregrounds the transformative role of SoTL in higher education, particularly within widening participation contexts and his discipline of sports therapy. Earle’s PhD, awarded through publication, explored the barriers and benefits of embedding SoTL within a widening participation sports therapy programme. He continues to publish prolifically in peer-reviewed journals and has authored books on anatomy, sports injury management, and SoTL.

Alongside his research and editorial work, Earle actively contributes to professional development through CPD delivery, curriculum consultancy, and national leadership roles. He chairs national groups advocating for changes in the recognition and regulation of soft tissue and complementary medicine practice, demonstrating his influence beyond academia.

Earle’s work is defined by his unwavering commitment to leading, championing, and inspiring excellence in SoTL globally, empowering others to embed scholarly and impactful approaches to teaching, learning, and academic practice.
