Professor Michael Anthony Samuel (School of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal) is currently involved in designing and supporting postgraduate studies and mentoring capacity development of supervisors in a range of contexts nationally and across the continent. His research interests include higher education studies, curriculum development and professional development. His books, (1) Changing patterns of teacher education in South Africa and (2) Continuity, complexity and change: Teacher education in Mauritius explore the challenges of (inter)national reform initiatives in teacher education policy development. His methodological insights are captured in his book (3) Lifehistory research: Epistemology, methodology and representation. (4) Disrupting higher education curriculum: Undoing cognitive damage explores options for imaginative curriculum redirection. In 2023 he launched a co-edited anthology on (5) Transforming postgraduate education in Africa. He has also reviewed the book (5) Education research in African contexts (2024) critiquing the saviour research mentality of methodological choices for education research design. He is the 2022 recipient of the South African Education Research Association (SAERA) Research Recognition Award for his distinctive contribution to educational research. Amongst other journals, he serves on the editorial board of the journal of the Scholarship of teaching and learning in the South and the Journal of Education of Teachers.
