Otema Yirenkyi

Adjunct: Image Analysis and Machine Learning

Otema Yirenkyi is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Computer Science and Information Systems Department at Ashesi University, where she teaches foundational concepts in computing, software, programming, and digital technologies. She holds an MSc in Image Analysis and Machine Learning from Uppsala University, Sweden, and a BSc in Computer Engineering from Ashesi University. Her teaching experience spans Ghana, Sweden, and Burkina Faso, where she has designed and delivered courses in Big Data and Databases, Data Analysis, and Business Ethics. Her teaching approach centres on active and demonstrative learning, relatable contexts, and helping students develop the ability to explain, question, and apply what they learn. She is particularly interested in helping students engage critically with emerging AI tools while maintaining independent thinking and academic integrity. Otema’s research interests are in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with a focus on computer vision, inclusive AI, and AI systems relevant to African contexts. Her research has explored the computational cost and time efficiency of supervised and unsupervised learning for real-time manufacturing quality inspection, emotion detection using CNN-based facial recognition, and lightweight object detection for resource-constrained devices. Beyond academia, she is the Co-founder and Operations Director of Because She Can, a non-profit focused on bridging the gender gap in technology, which has impacted over 15,000 beneficiaries and built a mentorship network across 17+ countries. She also contributes to Africa-Europe academic collaboration through CoRE-AI at Uppsala University, having coordinated a research exchange for African PhD students. Through her academic, technical, and community work, Otema is interested in building technology education and AI research that expand African participation in the creation, not simply consumption, of technology.
