Maria Bortei Doku ’28

Maria Bortei-Doku is an Economics student with a strong interest in African development and youth education. As Deputy Speaker of Parliament, she is committed to representing student concerns and supporting the well-being of the Ashesi community through thoughtful and inclusive parliamentary leadership.

Maria previously served as a Member of Parliament, where she gained hands-on experience in student governance and legislative processes. She is also the founder of the Ashesi Students in Politics, Advocacy, and Governance Club, an initiative created to encourage critical dialogue and innovative thinking around contemporary African issues.

In addition, Maria has contributed to institutional governance as Secretary to the Ashesi Constitution Review Team and as a Vetting Committee panelist. Across these roles, she demonstrates strong leadership, communication, and negotiation skills, guided by a deep sense of service.

Outside leadership, Maria enjoys watching documentaries, reading, and analyzing poetry.
