Joseph Otoo (PhD)

Full-time: Applied Statistics

I am a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Ashesi University and an applied statistician with more than sixteen years of teaching experience across senior high, technical university, and graduate levels. I hold a PhD in Applied Statistics from University of Technology and Applied Sciences, an MSc in Industrial Mathematics from KNUST, and a first degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Cape Coast. My teaching spans calculus, statistics, and quantitative methods, and I work to make quantitative reasoning practical and accessible to students across every discipline. My research applies statistics and machine learning to real problems in agriculture, health, and industry. I have served as a quantitative analyst with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and as a data-science consultant on health and development projects across Ghana. My teaching is student-centred and problem-based. I open with a real problem and let the mathematics emerge as the tool students need, in a classroom where they feel safe to attempt, question, and learn. I am committed to mentoring students in research and to using data for decisions that improve lives.
