Ghana’s President Appoints Ashesi’s Dr. Esi Ansah to Constitution Review Committee

Dr. Esi Ansah, Executive Director of Ashesi’s Center for Leadership, has been appointed by the President of Ghana to serve on a newly established Constitution Review Committee. The eight-member committee was sworn in on January 30, 2025, with a mandate to assess challenges in previous constitutional review implementation processes, and propose actionable recommendations to strengthen Ghana’s democratic governance.

The committee is chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, a former Ashesi University Board Director and Professor of Law, who currently serves as Executive Director of the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-Ghana).

“The task before you is critical,” said President Mahama during the swearing-in ceremony. “You are helping to shape the future of our dear nation, Ghana. Your mandate is to carefully examine past recommendations, identify necessary changes, and create a clear roadmap toward meaningful constitutional amendments.”

Other members of the committee include:

  • Justice Sophia Adinyira – retired Justice of the Supreme Court and member of the United Nations Appeal Tribunal
  • Charlotte Osei – Lawyer and former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission
  • Prof. Kwame Karikari – Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication
  • Dr. Godwin Djokoto – Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law
  • Ibrahim Tanko Amadu – Programme Director at STAR-Ghana Foundation
  • Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya – Lawyer and oil and gas consultant, who will serve as Secretary to the committee

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Prof. Prempeh affirmed their commitment to the task ahead. “Over the next six months, we pledge to uphold this trust with sincerity and a commitment to improving our nation’s future.”
