Department of

Economics

The Economics Department at Ashesi bridges the worlds of theory and practice, combining rigorous economic and business education with Ashesi’s core values of integrity, curiosity, and a commitment to the public good.

The Economics department focuses on shaping how future economists, policy thinkers, and business innovators understand Africa’s evolving economies. Faculty members in the department include experienced scholars and industry practitioners who bring both global insight and local relevance to their teaching. Our research and classroom discussions often center on African case studies, ensuring that students encounter economic and business challenges grounded in their own contexts.

About Ashesi's Economics Program

Africa needs good economists and sound economic policy thinking. The continent will be the world’s most populous in a generation. There is an opportunity for the continent’s economies to leverage this for growth. To achieve this, ethical, well-rounded, and competent economists are needed in government and business in Sub-Saharan Africa to improve the quality of decision-making and implementation of action plans. Ashesi’s Economics program prepares such economists for the continent.

What Makes Our Program Unique?

Quantitative Rigor

Our program emphasizes strong analytical and quantitative skills, including advanced mathematics, econometrics, and coding for data analysis, preparing students for graduate school and high-impact careers.

Entrepreneurial & Policy Focus

Beyond theory, we train students to apply economics to real-world challenges. From entrepreneurship projects to policy analysis, our curriculum equips graduates to innovate and influence economic transformation in Africa.

Global & Interdisciplinary Perspective

Students benefit from Ashesi’s liberal arts foundation and global partnerships, gaining exposure to diverse perspectives and collaborative projects across economics, business, engineering, and technology.
