On the 4th of November, members of the Ashesi community who visited the Hive – the university dining and recreation centre – met traditional music and beautiful displays of culture from students as part of this academic year’s first Global Café. The Office of Diversity and International Programs organises the Global Café each semester to give the University community a chance to actively learn about the many cultures represented at Ashesi at any point in time.
Country representatives, usually students, run poster sessions about the diverse cultures they represent, expressions of this culture on campus – including artefacts and cuisine – and help advance cross-cultural awareness and inclusion on campus.
This semester’s event focused on East African countries represented by Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, and DRC, but also included France and Switzerland (represented by exchange students on campus).
“We must give the Ashesi community an awareness of the diversity represented on campus and create opportunities to experience the contexts of the many people in our community,” said Vanessa Amoako ’16, Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We want people to see and experience all the different and interesting cultures for themselves and showcase the inclusivity on campus. The Global Café allows us to do this effectively and sustainably.
For many current students experiencing this for the first time – mainly having returned to campus after the pandemic this year – it was exciting to engage more with Ashesi’s cultural diversity.
“We enjoyed the event,” shared Jada ’25 and Enesse ’25. “It was nice getting to know more about members from our class and their countries, and the Swiss chocolate was ‘mwah’.”
