Derrick Owusu’s Vision for the Future of Accessible Technology

Derrick Owusu ’29, a Computer Science major, discovered his passion for computing while at Mampong Senior High Technical School for the Deaf. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) was one of his electives, and while the lessons sparked his curiosity, he felt they were left much unexplored. “I realized that what they taught us was incomplete, but I had always been passionate and interested in computing,” he explained.

That spark has since become a mission. “I really want to hone my skills in computing and invent solutions to make life easier for persons with disability,” he said.

The journey to Ashesi was not without hurdles. “My journey has not been easy, but I’ve been focused and determined to pursue my dreams,” he shared. Since arriving on campus, Owusu has been encouraged by the supportive and inclusive learning environment. “I am excited to see that Ashesi has a lot of inclusive resources, and the sign language interpreters are also very skilled,” he said.

He is equally drawn to the university’s diversity and sense of community. “I’ve seen people from different countries and religions, and I want to connect with them to experience what life in Ashesi is truly like.”

Beyond academics, Owusu hopes to give back by sharing what he knows. “I would like to support others as a peer tutor and teach sign language to help create a more inclusive Ashesi community,” he said.

As he looks to the future, Owusu is determined to build more than a career. He carries with him the guidance of a mentor who continues to shape his outlook. “My mentor has asked me to focus on my studies, commit to personal development, and above all, be courageous, bold, and persistent. With this attitude, I would surely succeed.”
