LLB400 Undergraduate Thesis

The thesis is a journal article length work of legal scholarship. Students conduct independent research that shows significant scholarship in the field of Law and contributes to the scholarly discourse in the process. The research will be supervised by a member of faculty and is an opportunity to understand complex questions from diverse legal foundations

The thesis requires that students be able to:

  1. Do thorough and relevant research independently,
  2. Write well.
  3. pose a research question and use the tools necessary to address the question.
  4. Ground the resolution of the problem in well digested legal theory
  5. demonstrate Ashesi learning goals through the student’s work

Summer

  • submit your topic to the Law capstone coordinator by Week 3 of Summer School. Topics will be approved, and supervisors assigned. Submit Form LC1 (on pages 32-33 of the Undergraduate Thesis Handbook) duly signed by your supervisor.

First semester

Week 1:

  • Meet with your supervisor to discuss the parameters of the thesis.
  • Weeks 2–3: Literature search, and paper outline development.
  • Weeks 4–6: outline finalised and submitted for supervisor feedback.
  • Week 7: revise outline to incorporate supervisor feedback and submit revised outline to the Capstone Coordinator.
  • Week 8: Mid-Semester Break
  • Week 9-12: library research, preliminary draft
  • Week 13: submit draft paper to supervisor for feedback.
  • Week 14: meet with Supervisor to discuss supervisor’s feedback.
  • Students can use the semester break to complete their papers.

Second Semester Week 1

Papers must be uploaded (strictly in PDF format) to Turnitin by 00:00 of Friday of Week 1. Note that a non-negotiable penalty applies for any submission a day after. Submissions that are two weeks late will not be marked and will earn an ’E’ letter grade. (Related information on pages 41-55 of the Undergraduate Thesis Handbook)
