LLB403 Public Policy Practicum
The Public Policy Practicum is designed for students to demonstrate their ability to function in the real world of policy and to make a positive impact therein. Students are expected to draw on both their public policy and legal training to resolve a real-life problem. The problem they are assigned will be calibrated to the appropriate level of complexity for an undergraduate challenge and will test the full range of policy making and policy advocacy skills students will have garnered in the course of the program. The skills include research and critical analysis; stakeholder engagement; project management; professionalism and communication
A student who successfully completes the Public Policy Practicum should be able to demonstrate:
- Mastery of foundations and key principles in Public Policy
- Application of rigorous research skills to understanding the problem and designing effective solutions
- Application of creative problem-solving skills in effectively addressing community needs and the equitable delivery of public goods
- Clarity in both written and oral communication, and the ability to use the appropriate tools and channels to advocate and defend policy choices
- Effective management of stakeholder relationships, time, and other resources in the process of designing a solution
- Week 1: The social problem.
- Supervisors are assigned to students. Submit supervisor Approval Forms
- Week 2-6: problem and policy approach research
- Week 7: policy approach presentation to supervisor for grading.
- Week 8: midsemester break:
- Weeks 9-14: preparation of Policy Portfolio (containing contextual background to the problem, justification of policy approach, policy framework and draft bill for implementing the policy).
- Week 15: submission of Policy Portfolio
- Weeks 16: Presentation of policy to panel (comprising supervisor, examiner, and/or industry mentor, and/or community leader)
LLB Law with Public Policy capstone
- Prerequisites: 8 Credits in Major Area of Study or Senior Standing in Law with Public Policy
- Credit Hours: 4
