Neo-Traditional African Dance Forms
This course invites the student to embark on a captivating journey into the world of African dance forms, focusing on vibrant Ghanaian traditions, contemporary expressions and importantly modern expressive areas where students will be encouraged to incorporate technology into their performance outputs. Students will be delving into both foundational movement techniques and the rich cultural and historical contexts that imbue these dances with life. Throughout the course, students will not only gain technical proficiency but also cultivate creativity, self-expression, increase in mental and emotional wellbeing and a sense of community through shared movement and rhythm.
- Master and execute basic to intermediate level dance vocabulary from Ghanaian traditions with precision and stylistic nuance
- Comprehend the cultural and historical significance of the dances encountered in the curriculum
- Utilize their understanding of traditional forms in addition to their use of media and technology to conceptually and physically articulate originality in their final work
- Discover a sense of community and connection through shared tasks and exploration of solutions
- Introduction to West African Dance: Students will explore the vast landscape of styles, rhythms, and aesthetics present within West African dance traditions
- Foundational Technique: Students will master core elements like polyrhythms, footwork, body isolations, and spatial awareness
- Dances for Celebration & Ritual: Students will learn dances connected to specific occasions and rituals, understanding their cultural significance and performative context
- Journeying through our land: Students will delve into the unique dance traditions of specific some Ghanaian ethnic groups (e.g., Ewe, Akna, Dagomba)
- Music & Instruments: Students will discover the vital role of music and traditional instruments in dance performance and expression
- From Tradition to Innovation: Students will apply their knowledge of traditional forms to create contemporary choreography, demonstrating conceptual development and innovation
- Student Choreography Workshops: Students will collaborate, refine, and rehearse their original dance pieces, receiving constructive feedback from instructors and peers
- Feedback & Growth: Students will receive constructive feedback from instructors and peers to polish their choreography and refine their artistic vision
- Culminating Performances: Students will showcase their creative journeys in final performances, celebrating their individual and collective achievements
- Concluding Discussions: Students will reflect on their learning experiences, share cultural insights, and contemplate the future of African dance and its ongoing evolution
