LLB110 Language for Law I
Language is the primary tool of a lawyer. Mastery of it is indispensable to the success of a would-be lawyer. This course provides a thorough refresher on the rules of English grammar and punctuation. It also offers students an opportunity to build up their vocabulary and learn to avoid some of the errors most commonly found in Ghanaian speech and writing
The course aims to ensure all law students can speak and write articulately, coherently, and persuasively
- Tenses
- When the present tense may be used
- Tense consistency
- The perfect tenses: how to construct and when to use them.
- When should ‘would’ be used?
- The subjunctive
- Punctuations: the comma, apostrophe, semi-colon, colon, ellipsis, and quotation marks and capital letters.
- Reported speech- how and when to use.
- Subject-verb agreement.
- Topic sentences and paragraphing.
- Main and subordinate clauses- what information goes into which?
