LLB111 Ghana Legal Systems& Methods
This core course introduces law students to the legal system of Ghana. What does it consist of? How does it work? What does it do? Where did it come from? etc. This course will answer these foundational questions. We will consider the methodology for bringing civil suits and criminal proceedings and analyse the process of judicial decision-making focusing particularly on the doctrine of stare decisis and the rules of interpretation in the common law tradition
The course is designed to enable law students to:
- acquire a good understanding of the structure and operation of the central institutions and processes of the Ghana legal system.
- understand legal terminology.
- Identify the effect of the historical development of the court system on its present operations.
- Identify the various sources of law and the basic institutions of the Ghana Legal System.
- Introduce students to key aspects of the judicial decision-making process
