LLB331 Gender and the Law
This course introduces students to the relationship between law and gender by demonstrating how the law accounts for the manner in which gender issues are constructed. We explore gender-based stereotypes and inequalities, and the role law plays in eliminating or reinforcing these stereotypes/ inequalities. We focus, in particular, on how women in general and specifically in Ghana have been and continue to be disadvantaged by questioning social norms and the biases of law. We also discuss key texts of feminist legal thinking and perspectives
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand and explain concepts in gender, and the role of feminism in the gender discourse.
- understand and explain the growth and development of women’s rights internationally and in Ghana as well.
- explain basic concepts of juvenile justice and child rights in Ghana
- understand and explain the linkages of gender and development
