Ashesi listed among African role models for green consciousness

In a story on African universities serving as role models for green consciousness across the continent, the Mail & Guardian Africa highlights Ashesi as one of seven continental champions “taking one for Mother Earth.” The story mentions the environmental sensitivity of Ashesi’s campus – from campus buildings designed to use more natural light to the university’s bio-digester – and efforts to encourage students to practice same.

“Universities have long been seen as agents of change – catalysts for social and political action as well as centres of learning,” Samantha Spooner writes for the M&G. “As people become more environmentally conscious, universities in turn are expected to step up to the plate, continuing to act as role models in becoming the engines and innovation centres for green consciousness. Across Africa we are seeing this shift occur with campus management and operations, planning and design.”

The story is part of a broader conversation around education in Africa as the African Universities Summit kicks off in Johannesburg, South Africa. In another story on Africa’s most iconic university buildings and libraries, Ashesi’s campus was again mentioned for its eco-friendly design.
