Campus Safety

SAFETY

Ashesi’s campus is a safe and welcoming home. Our student life and engagement, facilities, security, and residence teams work around the clock to support students, and are supported by a community that looks out for one another. Resident Assistants live in all halls to ensure guidance, connection, and care.

Safety at Ashesi is proactive. Students participate in orientation sessions, wellness talks, and awareness campaigns that address topics such as consent, fire safety, cybersecurity, and bystander responsibility.

Consent & Care

Building a community where everyone feels safe and respected and means promoting care, accountability, and education in every aspect of campus life. Our approach to healthy relationships and appropriate sexual behaviour, focuses on helping students and staff make informed, respectful choices while knowing support is always available. All sexual misconduct prevention programs are coordinated under the Office of International Programs and Campus Cohesion.

Ashesi prohibits all forms of harassment, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, across all its programs and activities, on campus and beyond.

Students are encouraged to approach all relationships, platonic or romantic, with respect and care. Expectations for student conduct are outlined in Sections 10.11–10.17 of the Student Handbook.

Faculty, staff, and employees are equally expected to maintain professional, respectful relationships with students and one another, and are prohibited from entering into amorous or sexual relationships with students.

Ashesi thrives on mutual respect. Violence, intimidation, or harassment of any kind (physical, verbal, written, or digital) has no place in our community. Students are encouraged to seek help and guidance from the Office of Student and Community Affairs or the Counselor if they experience or witness harmful behavior.

Every incoming class at Ashesi takes part in a series of interactive trainings during their first year on respectful and healthy relationships. These sessions are designed to equip students with the understanding, tools, and confidence to build relationships —sexual or non-sexual —that are grounded in respect, consent, and care for others.

The program helps students to:

  • Develop skills for healthy, abuse-free relationships.

  • Recognize and prevent all forms of sexual misconduct, including assault, harassment, and non-consensual relationships.

  • Gain the language and confidence to address harmful situations and seek help when needed.

  • Contribute to a campus culture where every student, faculty, and staff member feels safe, supported, and respected.

Training Modules

Each year’s program includes a mix of reflection, discussion, and learning:

  1. Module One: Value Systems and Good Communication in Relationships

  2. Module Two: Understanding Consent and Sexual Misconduct

  3. Module Three: Definitions and Misconceptions around Sexual Misconduct

  4. Module Four: Institutional Policies and Reporting

  5. Module Five: Protecting Our Campus Beyond Awareness

We recognize that coming forward after experiencing sexual harm is a deeply personal decision. At Ashesi, you have the right to decide if, how, and when to take action, barring a few exceptions.

Disclosure allows you, a witness, or bystander to share information about an incident; whether to seek guidance, emotional support, or medical and counseling services. Disclosure does not automatically begin a formal investigation. The Office of International Programs and Campus Cohesion, provides confidential listening and guidance and takes further action only with the survivor’s consent. Community members can disclose sexual misconduct incidents by completing a confidential online reporting system, or by:

a. Speaking with Dr. Millicent Adjei (Radichel Hall 210)
b.
Contacting a Community or Student First Responder
c. Speaking to a member of the counseling and wellness team.
d. Reaching out to a trusted faculty or staff member

Formal Reports are made when a survivor chooses to begin an investigative process that may lead to formal adjudication. Students can file a report securely through Ashesi’s confidential online reporting system [click here].

The MySafeCampus Fund empowers students to take an active role in building a safer community. Students can apply for funding to carry out independent projects that raise awareness about sexual misconduct prevention and promote respect across campus. Apply here.

Shared Spaces

From regular fire drills and emergency response training to safety protocols and well-maintained facilities, we work to ensure that students and staff are empowered to help keep our campus community safe.

Ashesi’s campus is equipped with fire prevention and safety systems to protect life and property. Students are expected to treat all safety equipment with care — misuse or tampering puts everyone at risk.

In the event of a fire alarm or emergency, students should:

  1. Stop work immediately and leave through the nearest exit, following posted signs.

  2. Stay calm and walk briskly; never run or use elevators.

  3. Assist others, especially anyone with mobility challenges.

  4. Gather at designated Emergency Assembly Points (behind the Library or at residence car parks).

  5. Wait for official clearance before re-entering any building.

Parking is permitted only in clearly marked areas on campus; typically near Radichel Hall, Sutherland Hall, the Multipurpose Building, the university gym, or the Porter’s Lodge. Vehicles must not be parked in fire lanes, on pedestrian walkways, or in front of building entrances.

Registration and Authorization
Students, faculty, and staff who wish to park on campus must register their vehicles with the Facilities and Logistics Office. Unauthorized vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

Safety and Courtesy
Drivers are expected to observe all posted speed limits and traffic signs on campus. Reckless driving, blocking access routes, or playing loud music from parked cars is not permitted.

Priority and Accessibility
Parking spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with designated areas reserved for visitors, staff, and persons with disabilities.

The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on campus or in off-campus hostels is not permitted. Students are also expected to remain free from intoxication at all Ashesi properties and university-sanctioned events. Similarly, the possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs or controlled substances is strictly prohibited both on campus and as part of any university activity.

These policies are designed to protect the wellbeing of the entire Ashesi community. Students who violate them may face disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or expulsion, and may also be subject to criminal prosecution in a case of Ghanain law being violated.

In some cases, students may be required to complete an approved drug or alcohol rehabilitation program at their own expense, in place of or alongside disciplinary measures.

To uphold this commitment, Ashesi reserves the right to conduct random drug screening tests when there is reasonable cause to believe that a student may be in violation of this policy.
