A move-in experience for parents of Ashesi’s Class of 2017

“I am incredibly excited that my child made it in! This university is amazing.” For most of the parents that turned up on campus for Ashesi’s annual Parents’ weekend, this was the general sentiment being shared.

Even though their invitations had mentioned that Ashesi was welcoming them for Parents’ Day at 2pm, parents had started arriving as early as  10.00 am, most helping their children to settle in. Move-in weekend, as always, was not just about Ashesi’s new students, but also about the parents and guardians who had helped them make their university decision.
Ashesi Provost, Dr. Marcia GrantDuring her welcome remarks, Ashesi Provost, Dr. Marcia Grant, spoke about the thrill of the prospects of university life for any freshman, and assured parents that the university was fully committed to helping their children discover their potential.

Ruth Kwakwa, Dean of Student and Community Affairs, also thanked parents for believing that Ashesi was the best place for their wards, and reminded parents that Ashesi would need their support to bring the best of out the Class of 2017.

“At Ashesi, our students grow up really quickly, and you will discover that the university is really keen on treating them like adults. So we encourage you to treat them like adults too, and have conversations with them about making the right choices.”
Ashesi Class of 2017 Parents' DayDesigned to give parents a glimpse into student life and culture at Ashesi, Parents’ Day saw many Ashesi staff, faculty and upperclassmen who interacted with Ashesi’s newest community members and answered questions from party-life on campus, to calculating a Grade Point Average.

“The organisation for this day has been fantastic,” one parent said. “Our children have just joined the university and we already feel like such a part of this community. It’s great to see such effort being put into welcoming parents.”

At the end of the welcome event parents got to meet each other and have conversations over snacks, as they reflected on the lessons that they were taking away from Ashesi, and the new adventure their children were embarking on.
