Ashesi students participate in Harvard Model UN conference

Model UN delegationA delegation of Ashesi students participated in the 57th Harvard National Model United Nations, hosted by the International Relations Department of Harvard University in Boston,Massachusetts.  The conference, which took place from 17th-20th February, saw 3500 students from all 58 countries coming together to deliberate on various global issues.  The goal of the conference is to simulate the proceedings of the real United Nations and challenge students to learn about other countries, cultures and international issues.  The Ashesi delegation shared ideas with other students on topics including trade and economics, politics in the international setting, disarmament and health in the various committees of the Model United Nations General Assembly.

At model UN conferences students are asked to represent the interests of a country other than their own.  The Ashesi delegation represented Paraguay in the General Assembly, where the students stepped into the shoes of diplomats and ambassadors, engaging in negotiations with the delegates from other countries. Ashesi students participated in four days of intense debate and negotiation which led to the drafting of new resolutions to solve various issues confronting United Nations member states.

The coaching and training received from Ashesi’s educational system are all factors that helped the Ashesi delegation in their preparations towards this conference.

The Ashesi delegation included: Isaac Appiah (Class of 2012), Juliana Esi T. Botsio (Class of 2012), Naa Ayeleysa Quaynor-Mettle (Class of 2013), Nii Okai Nunoo (Class of 2013), Annatu Neina Abdulai (Class of 2013) Liddell Yorke (Class of 2014), Prince Yeboah Benneh (Class of 2014) and Benjamin Epton Owusu (Class of 2014). The delegation received tremendous support and sponsorship from Ashesi University, for which the delegation was extremely grateful.

One of the delegates, Prince Benneh Yeboah, stated that, “I feel so proud to be part of this great experience Ashesi has exposed to me.”
