November 26, 2016 – The Ashesi Student Council, with support from the DreamOval Foundation and MTN Ghana Foundation, held an inter-university code fair. Overall, over seventy participants from seven tertiary institutions including Regent University College, Ghana Technology University College, Accra Institute of Technology, Garden City University College , Presbyterian University College and Ashesi participated in the programming competition held on Ashesi’s campus.
The Ashesi Code Fair aims primarily to challenge students’ programming prowess, and at the same time give them a platform to compete, expand their network and gain exposure to real-world programming problems.
“It’s a great opportunity to immerse students, regardless of their major, in technology and computer programming,” said Kingsley Agyekum ’17, Academic Chairperson for the Student Council. “For those whose major involves programming, it’s even a better avenue for them to apply concepts they have been exposed to and test their potency and readiness to enter the world of work.”
For the competition, participants competed in either the advanced or intermediate division, working in teams or individually. In the end, third year student from Ashesi, Hector Amoah ’18, was adjudged the overall winner while Kweku Arko Mensah, Emmanuel Agadzi, Samuel Dapaah and Samuel Asiedu who formed a team from Garden City University College took the second-place position. Winners were awarded prizes from the co-sponsors.
“The DreamOval Foundation operates on three core values; knowledge-creation, knowledge-utilization and knowledge-sharing,” said Mina Asabea, Program Coordinator at DreamOval Foundation. While education and technology are our focus, we also do all we can to drive innovation, and that is what the Ashesi Code Fair is about. Since its inception it has created the avenue for talented coders to converge and work on meaningful projects. This year’s program had the support of MTN Ghana and was total success. Congratulations to all winners.”
