MARCH 16, 2026

Johnson Pendaeli Maturo ’27, who passed away on March 5th, 2026, was a student of purpose whose presence was felt in and out of the classroom.

In celebration of his life, the Ashesi Community came together to reflect on his legacy and share tributes in his honor. Here is a recap of the event in photos.

Johnson Maturo came to Ashesi with a record that would take some people a full career to accumulate. He came as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar — a program designed to identify young Africans of exceptional promise and support their education so they can go on to transform their communities. Johnson did not wait for graduation to begin that work.

Led by Ashesi President, Patrick Awuah, the community planted a tree on campus in Johnson's honor.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Mastercard Foundation, and the Tanzanian Consulate in Ghana.

Dean of Student and Community Affairs, Abdul Mahdi, speaks about activities for the rest of the afternoon, and thanks community for participating.

The remembrance continued in the Archer Cornfield Courtyard, with tributes being read on behalf of students, faculty, staff, Tanzanians, and the Mastercard Foundation.

At Ashesi, we speak about educating ethical, entrepreneurial leaders for Africa. Johnson was already that person. All he needed was a community that matched the work he had already begun, and we are honored that he chose us for that. We extend our deepest condolences to Johnson’s family in Tanzania—those who raised him, taught him, and loved him.
