Timothy Asare is a renewable energy and automation enthusiast whose work bridges engineering innovation and rural development. A member of the pioneering class of the Ashesi-ETH Master’s Programme in Mechatronic Engineering, and having received a scholarship from Barry Callebaut, Asare is passionate about designing sustainable and appropriate technologies for Africa’s growth.
His career spans diverse roles—from electrical and instrumentation engineering in oil and gas, to flight operations at Zipline, and client service consulting. At Ashesi, he contributed to the design of a mechanised grain planter aimed at empowering small and medium-scale farmers across sub-Saharan Africa. He has conducted techno-economic analyses of renewable energy microgrids and explored biomass gasification as a pathway to reducing fossil fuel use in industry. Currently, he is collaborating with Prof. John Lygeros at ETH Zurich on optimizing battery energy storage for Ashesi’s renewable microgrid system.
A strong advocate for youth empowerment and STEM education, Asare serves as the Student Activities Chair for the IEEE Ghana Section and volunteers as a STEM educator. He was the founding president of the Rotaract Club and helped establish the IEEE Student Branch at Ashesi. Beyond his professional pursuits, he is passionate about mentoring and community building—coaching the Ashesi Football League’s Red Army FC, and also playing on the University’s volleyball team.
