Ashesi’s Engineering programme to launch on October 3rd

Ashesi is happy to announce that the inauguration ceremony for its new Engineering Building will take place on Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 at 10:00am. Invited guests include the Vice President of Ghana, and former NASA Astronaut Robert “Bobby” Satcher. The inauguration ceremony will also serve as the launch for new degrees in Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Developed over two and a half years, Ashesi’s engineering majors will be the biggest addition to the university’s academic programmes since 2005.

“This is a moment that caps two and a half years of focused effort to lay the foundation for an engineering programme at Ashesi,” said Ashesi President, Patrick Awuah, when accreditation for the degrees was granted in July 2015. “It also marks a beginning for us, as we […] set off on a journey of design, tinkering and innovation.”

Ashesi’s new engineering majors, by placing emphasis on hands-on learning, entrepreneurship, design and problem solving, will equip students with skills to create long-term solutions to Africa’s engineering challenges and deploy better-designed infrastructure for local needs.

Started in 2013, the Engineering project was funded by $6.2 million in philanthropy from donors worldwide, and will see Ashesi’s enrollment increase to some 1,000 students over the next four years.
