As part of their efforts to increase extracurricular activities on campus, the Ashesi Student Council in February this year began Ashesi’s first soccer League. A tournament that is entirely student run, the league is made up of six clubs, with games played every weekend.
To streamline management, an Ashesi Football Association was set up to oversee the tournament and create rules and guidelines for both clubs and players to follow. The tournament closely mirrors existing professional leagues, and has been well patronised by the Ashesi student body.
The six clubs are:
Walabele FC
Berekuso Babies FC
Albright United
League of Legends FC
Arab Money FC
Red Army FC
All teams have unique identifying replica jerseys, which were purchased entirely by the teams themselves. In addition, the teams have managers and technical advisors, also students, who manage strategies for their players.
The table for the league is currently as follows:
Teams | Points |
Red Army FC | 21 |
Arab Money FC | 15 |
Berekuso Babies FC | 15 |
Walabele FC | 11 |
Albright United | 11 |
L.O.L FC | 6 |
Dean of Students, Mrs. Adzo Ashie, commended students for taking the initiative to start the league, and has been present at a few of the games to cheer the players on. The winner of the tournament receives a cash prize and a trophy from the Student Council. We wish the teams all the best!
