Berekuso, December 6, 2023 – Ashesi University has launched a training programme partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve healthcare outcomes in Ghana. The collaboration with Ashesi marks an evolution of the “Pathways to Leadership for Health Transformation in Africa” program; the WHO’s leadership training efforts began in 2021 in partnership with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The programme aims to bolster the capacity of Senior Officers to effectively lead teams and improve the delivery of health services across Africa. To date, the programme has enrolled participants from Ghana, Benin, Congo, Lesotho and Niger. In Ghana, 109 senior managers in Ghana’s Ministry of Health have participated across four cohorts. The collaboration with Ashesi University will further amplify the impact of this initiative, leveraging the university’s expertise in leadership education.
“Today we are happy to launch with Cohort Five of the programme to be hosted by Ashesi, which is renowned for nurturing ethical leadership,” shared Professor Francis Kasolo, Country Representative for WHO Ghana. “Our partnership demonstrates country-level cooperation in improving health outcomes.”
The four-month programme will walk participants through four pillars of leadership – of self, others, organizations, and society. The curriculum will cover various topics, including strategic planning, managing teams and stakeholders, leadership for transformation, and ethical action.
“Our health sector relies on these leaders,” shared Dr. Baffour Awuah, speaking on behalf of Ghana’s Minister of Health. “We urge Ashesi and your faculty to deliver with passion and diligence to enhance the leadership skills of our human resource, promote innovation, improve patient care, support collaboration, and ultimately address health disparities.”
