While on shift as a security officer at Melcom (Spintex branch), Christopher Gefli ’29 noticed an Achimota School alumni car tag hanging from the rear-view mirror of a customer’s vehicle. As an alumnus of Achimota himself, he approached the customer to strike a conversation, presuming she was a fellow alumnus.
That brief interaction led Gefli to discover that Ashesi University had opened admissions for the second cohort of the undergraduate Class of 2029. At the time, he was already considering options for his tertiary education, and this information piqued his interest. After the conversation, he visited Ashesi University’s website to learn more.
Knowing that Ashesi offered scholarships and financial support reassured him that attending could be possible, which encouraged him to apply.
Before this, Gefli studied General Science at his alma mater, where he was a member of the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) larger team. He described the experience as academically demanding due to the rigor of the program. Although he did not represent the school at the competition stage, the experience instilled in him the values of persistence and teamwork.
At Achimota, Gefli was part of both the volleyball and football teams and had the opportunity to serve as captain of the school’s football team. Even without winning trophies, the experience shaped his outlook. “You don’t always win, and that is life. What matters is remaining focused and still moving,” he says.
While balancing his studies, NSMQ activities, and sports, Gefli was volunteering as a Sunday school teacher at the Christ Apostolic Church, a role he found “fulfilling.”
Months after that interaction at Melcom, Gefli is now reading Computer Engineering at Ashesi University as part of the Undergraduate Class of 2029 Cohort B, on a comprehensive scholarship. Excited about the journey ahead, he looks forward to what this next chapter brings.
